The average American household contains 3-10 gallons of hazardous materials, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. These include everyday items such as bleach, oil, pesticides, medication and cleaning supplies.
USFA warns that these products can pose serious fire, health or environmental hazards if not handled and stored properly. To reduce these risks, the agency recommends:
- Reduce your home’s amount of hazardous materials by purchasing only the amount needed for the job.
- Store materials in their original containers, and make sure labels do not peel off.
- Store flammable products such as gasoline, kerosene, propane or paint thinners away from the home, sunlight and direct flame.
- Regularly inspect storage areas for leaky containers, improper ventilation or the smell of fumes.
- Do not dump cleaners containing a solvent down the drain or in the trash.
