The Washington Department of Labor and Industries recently announced a 12 percent average increase in workers’ compensation insurance premiums.
According to an L&I press release, average premiums will increase by 6.5 cents per hours worked, although individual rates will depend on an employer’s claims history and the frequency of costs and claims in the industry.
L&I Director Judy Schurke said the department tried to reduce costs in the claims-management process, but could not overcome the negative impact of the economy.

The new rates are scheduled to go into effect Jan. 1 under an emergency rule effective for 120 days. L&I plans to host public hearings on the rates in January.
