Bilbao, Spain — The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has unveiled a new webpage on occupational cancers.
“Cancer remains the leading cause of work-related deaths in the [European Union],” the agency says, “accounting for 100,000 fatalities annually and exposing millions of workers to cancer risk factors in their daily jobs.”
The webpage features data on work-related cancers and an “overview of EU action on prevention.”
Although chemical agents “remain the main cause of work-related cancer, they are not the only ones,” the agency says. “Physical and organizational risk factors also play an important role. These include solar ultraviolet radiation, night work, and other factors linked to work organization and working conditions.”
The webpage highlights a research project on cancer risks factors, along with the organization’s S.T.O.P. Carcinogens at Work initiative. It also includes a link to a fact sheet on carcinogens at work.
