Now, about that picture in your mind: Is the average safety professional a man or a woman? Older or younger? Making a comfortable wage or struggling? Experienced or new on the job?

It’s difficult to describe an average safety professional because so much depends on circumstance. Yet some clear trends have emerged from the results of Safety+Health’s 2015 Salary Survey. More than 1,400 safety professionals took part in the survey, which gathered details on everything from earnings and industry-specific trends to the most common types of pay raises.

According to the results of the survey, the average safety professional is a man. More than three-quarters (77.6 percent) of respondents were male, while only 22.4 percent were female.

Another defining feature: age. Nearly two-fifths (17.4 percent) of the respondents are at least 60 years old, and more than half (54.3 percent) are at least 50 years old. Only 3 percent are younger than 30. Survey results also show that the average safety professional earns a healthy paycheck. Nearly one-third (31.7 percent) of respondents earn at least $100,000 a year, and more than half (54.5 percent) earn at least $80,000 a year.
