Arlington, VA – More mining deaths occurred during the first half of 2014 than during the same time period last year, according to a fatality update from the Mine Safety and Health Administration.
Between Jan. 1 and June 30, 22 miners died, compared with 18 during the first half of 2013 and 19 in 2012. In the first six months of 2011, mining deaths were at an all-time low, with 14 deaths.
Because of the increase in fatalities, MSHA has launched a number of initiatives, including increased enforcement and hazard awareness outreach efforts.
“These deaths should serve as a wake-up call for all of us to keep safety at the forefront at all times,” MSHA chief Joseph A. Main said in a press release. “We know it takes the efforts of all of us in MSHA and the mining industry to improve mine safety and health.”
