Greenbelt, MD — Commercial motor vehicle inspectors throughout North America will conduct announced and unannounced brake system inspections Aug. 21-27 during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual Brake Safety Week.
Inspectors are expected to place special emphasis on brake hosing and tubing during this year’s outreach and enforcement event.
Last year’s Brake Safety Week campaign resulted in nearly 36,000 inspections and identified almost 4,300 vehicles, or 12%, with out-of-service conditions.
“Poorly maintained brake systems can reduce the braking capacity and stopping distance of large trucks and motorcoaches, which poses a serious risk to driver and public safety,” CVSA President John Broers said in a press release. “In those split-second emergency situations, the proper functionality of the brake systems on large commercial motor vehicles is crucial.”
Brake Safety Week is part of Brake Safety Awareness Month. The event is aligned with CVSA’s Operation Airbrake campaign – a program conducted in partnership with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, and Mexico’s National Guard and Ministry of Communications and Transportation.
