Oakland, CA — The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health is requesting nominations for members to serve on its recently established advisory committee focused on the safety and health of household domestic service workers.
The committee will develop industry-specific guidance to educate domestic employees and employers on identifying and evaluating workplace hazards, and preventing or minimizing injuries and illnesses on the job, according to a press release from the state’s Department of Industrial Relations. Additionally, the committee will make recommendations on what further policies may be adopted by DIR or the state legislature to protect the health and safety of domestic workers.
The deadline to submit applications is Feb. 18. Cal/OSHA encourages domestic workers with experience inside or outside the home and employers of domestic workers to apply.
Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) signed S.B. 321 into law in September, mandating the committee’s creation. The committee, to be composed of no fewer than 13 and no more than 18 individuals, will meet regularly throughout the year.
