Redmond, WA – Physio-Control has issued a voluntary field action of its LIFEPAK 1000 automated external defibrillator, citing reports of unexpected shutdowns while patients were being treated with the device.
In a Jan. 13 press release, the company states that the “intermittent connection is the result of wear and subsequent oxidation formation between the battery and device electrical contacts.” The company has instructed device owners to immediately remove and reinstall the battery on a weekly basis. Devices exposed to vibration and with a non-rechargeable battery installed for longer periods are more susceptible to the problem.
The company is determining hardware correction changes to eliminate the issue and will contact customers to schedule a device correction when specifics are finalized. Customers will be contacted by mail, but can check updates online.
