LaHood announces resignation

Washington – Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood announced on Jan. 29 that he will not return for a second term.

During his tenure (.pdf file) as secretary, the Federal Aviation Administration released a final rule on pilot fatigue and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration instituted new limits on commercial motor vehicle drivers’ hours-of-service regulations. Additionally, 39 states and the District of Columbia have bans on texting while driving, compared with only 18 states when he became secretary in 2009.

LaHood will remain in his position until a successor is confirmed, he said in an email to Department of Transportation employees.
