Children’s center: Protective eyewear can help prevent sports injuries

Baltimore – August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety month, and the Johns Hopkins Children’s Center is advising parents to make sure young athletes wear eye protection when playing high-risk sports. High-risk sports include fencing, boxing, soccer, basketball, softball, lacrosse and baseball, the center said.

Safety glasses, goggles, shields and eye guards are all examples of safe eyewear, which can help prevent 9 out of 10 injuries when worn consistently, according to a Johns Hopkins press release.

The center recommends that children wear protective eyewear during practice and games and that parents consult an ophthalmologist or an optometrist to find proper protective eyewear for a particular sport.
