MSHA extends comment period for proposed detection systems rule

Arlington, VA – The Mine Safety and Health Administration has extended the comment period to Nov. 28 for its proposed rule (.pdf file) on proximity detection systems. The previous deadline was Nov. 14.

The proposed rule would require mine operators to equip current and newly manufactured machines with proximity detection systems, which can sense the presence of people or other machinery and be programmed to stop the machine to prevent contact. MSHA published the proposed rule on Aug. 31 and hosted public meetings in October.
