Washington – NIOSH and OSHA have developed a new guidance document to help construction employers and their workers avoid the dangers of nail guns.
Released Sept. 21, Nail Gun Safety: A Guide for Construction Contractors (.pdf file) covers the following steps for nail gun safety:
- Using the full sequential trigger
- Providing training
- Establishing nail gun work procedures
- Encouraging reporting and discussion of injuries and close calls
- Providing first aid and medical treatment
According to OSHA, nail gun injuries occur during unintended nail discharge, nails bouncing off a hard surface or missing the target, or when the gun’s safety features are disabled.
