Washington – More than 47,400 pedestrians were killed nationwide in a 10-year span, according to a report released May 24 by advocacy group Transportation for America.
According to a press release, Dangerous by Design (.pdf file) and its interactive map of the most dangerous metropolitan areas for pedestrians are based on state data for pedestrian fatalities that occurred from 2000 to 2009. The top four most dangerous cities – Orlando, Miami, Jacksonville and Tampa – are in Florida. Other metro areas identified as dangerous for pedestrians are San Bernardino, CA; Las Vegas; Memphis, TN; Phoenix; Dallas-Fort Worth; and Houston. Additional findings show:
- More than 688,000 pedestrians were injured from 2000 to 2009.
- Nearly 4,000 pedestrians killed were 15 or younger.
The report also included recommendations on how the federal government can incorporate promotion of safer, more walkable streets into the design of transportation systems.
