Washington – The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration is seeking comment on draft guidance for training providers who develop materials for training medical examiners on determining whether interstate commercial motor vehicle drivers are medically fit to drive.
According to a notice (.pdf file) published in the May 17 Federal Register, minimum training requirements were part of a notice of proposed rulemaking (.pdf file) published by FMCSA in 2008 to create a National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. Proponents of the registry claim implementation would help prevent medically unfit CMV drivers from operating on interstate highways.
The deadline for comment on the draft guidance is June 16. FMCSA officials said a final rule is expected to be published late this summer.
