More than 2,000 people suffer eye injuries on the job every day, according to Prevent Blindness America. The Chicago-based organization contends that 90 percent of all workplace eye injuries are preventable with the use of proper safety eyewear.
PBA offers these tips:
- Conduct a thorough analysis of plant operations. This should include an inspection of work areas, access routes and equipment, and identification of operations and areas that prevent eye hazards.
- Incorporate vision testing into your company’s pre-placement and routine physical examinations of employees. Uncorrected vision problems contribute to accidents.
- Ensure employees always wear protective eyewear when hazards exist.
- Have eyewear fitted by an eye care professional or trained individual. Workers cannot be expected to use their protective eyewear unless it fits properly and comfortably.
- Make eyewash stations accessible, particularly where chemicals are used, and have employees trained in basic first aid.
- Conduct ongoing educational programs to establish, maintain and reinforce the need for protective eyewear on the job.
