To make way for a new interoperable public safety communication system, the Federal Communications Commission adopted an order (MS Word doc) prohibiting the sale or distribution of devices operating in the 700-megahertz frequency.
The order is primarily directed at wireless microphone systems that operate within the band — including those used by theaters, churches, schools, conference centers, theme parks and musicians — and could cause interference with future public safety or 4G wireless devices that use the band. Use of such devices must cease by June 12.
FCC said the order, along with the more recent switch to digital television from analog, is part of the agency’s effort to clear the spectrum for a potential public safety interoperable communication system.
