Agency discusses titanium dioxide research

Washington – NIOSH recently issued a Current Intelligence Bulletin (.pdf file) containing a review of scientific information and recommended exposure limits for titanium dioxide.

TiO2 is an insoluble white powder used in commercial products such as paint, cosmetics, plastics and food. The bulletin covers occupational exposure through inhalation to fine and ultrafine TiO2, including engineered TiO2 nanoparticles.

NIOSH concluded insufficient evidence exists to classify fine TiO2 as an occupational carcinogen, but that ultrafine TiO2 has the potential to cause cancer.
