Bulletin highlights dangers of ice-making machines

Tumwater, WA – A new e-bulletin from the Washington State Department of Labor and Industries outlines hazards associated with industrial ice-making machines.

Issued Sept. 13, the bulletin (.pdf file) describes three recent incidents, including one in which a worker using a piece of pipe to break up an ice jam was pulled into the machine. The worker’s left leg was amputated as a result of the injuries.

The bulletin recommends adhering to lockout/tagout and confined space regulations to prevent such incidents.
