The Chemical Safety Board on June 7 released a 14-minute safety video on the hazards of performing “hot work” in and around storage tanks containing flammable liquids.
The video summarizes major lessons from the agency’s hot work safety bulletin (.pdf file), issued after a hot work-related explosion killed three workers at the Packaging Corporation of America in Wausau, WI, in 2008.
CSB defines hot work as burning, welding or similar spark-producing operations that can cause fires. At least 11 hot work accidents and five fatalities have occurred since CSB released the bulletin, according to an agency press release.
The video includes 3-D computer animations of three hot work accidents and interviews with a man who suffered burns to more than 90 percent of his body and a widow whose husband died in a hot work accident.
