DHS creates accreditation program for private sector

The Department of Homeland Security on Tuesday adopted final standards for an accreditation and certification program in emergency preparedness for the private sector.

The Voluntary Private Sector Preparedness Accreditation and Certification Program establishes a mechanism by which a private-sector organization can receive emergency preparedness certification from a DHS-accredited third party.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano stressed that certification, although entirely voluntary, would provide organizations with the “tools they need to enhance the readiness and resiliency of our nation.”
