Editor’s Note: Are you connecting?

As I look over the May issue, I see an overall theme for the safety community: connecting. With workers, with executives and with other safety pros.

In this month’s cover story about keeping roofing workers safe, Associate Editor Kevin Druley calls attention to the National Safety Stand-Down to Prevent Falls in Construction. OSHA calls the event, which takes place this month, an opportunity for employers and safety pros to “talk directly to employees” and “have a conversation.”

For a separate article, Kevin spoke with OSHA’s Eric Harbin. The administrator of the agency’s Dallas Region presented “OSHA’s Top 10” at the 2025 NSC Safety Congress & Expo. In this month’s Q&A, Harbin points to a new effort to communicate with employers and workers: the “OSHA Cares” initiative.

Communicating effectively is a skill that must be developed. Also this month, Associate Editor Alan Ferguson explores the concept of emotional intelligence, and how safety pros can strengthen this “key skill” to create connections and gain influence with workers and senior
leadership alike.

And in our “BCSP Viewpoints” column, guest contributor Ashok Garlapati, a Board of Certified Safety Professionals ambassador, wants fellow safety pros to know that “our world is so interconnected today – take advantage of it!”

Here’s a new way to do that: If your employer is a National Safety Council member, you’re invited to join NSC’s online community. NSC calls it “a space designed for collaboration; sharing ideas; and connecting with peers who are passionate about health, safety and environmental excellence.” Go to nsc.org/member-corner to learn more.

And, as always, we at Safety+Health would love to connect with you. Please follow us on LinkedIn and make your voice heard. We appreciate you.
