Washington – The Environmental Protection Agency on May 6 issued a significant new use rule for multi-walled carbon nanotubes.
The rule, issued under the Toxic Substances Control Act, will require companies that plan to manufacture, import or process the nanotubes to notify EPA at least 90 days before the activity.
EPA said the substance may be hazardous to human health, and advance notification will allow the agency, if necessary, to stop or limit the intended use.

The rule is scheduled to go into effect June 6.
Earlier this year, NIOSH sought comment on a Current Intelligence Bulletin (.pdf file) concerning occupational exposure to carbon nanotubes and nanofibers.
