Atlanta – Military veterans are 30 percent more likely to experience severe hearing loss than non-veterans, according to research published in the July 22 edition of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.
The study, which analyzed data on people 17 and older from the Census Bureau’s Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the Current Population Survey, also found that veterans who served in the United States or abroad from September 2001 to March 2010 were 4 times more likely than non-veterans to have severe hearing loss.
The rate of hearing loss was higher among older veterans, and female veterans had a significantly lower prevalence than their male counterparts, the report said.
CDC recommended increased focus on improving military hearing conservation programs and hearing loss surveillance in military and veterans systems.
