Commercial motor vehicles can drive faster on rural interstate highways in Illinois now that a new law has gone into effect.
The uniform speed limit on all rural interstate highways was raised on Jan. 1 to 65 mph from 55 mph. House Bill 3956 was approved with little discussion in the state Senate despite opposition from the Illinois Department of Transportation and the Illinois State Police. Sen. John M. Sullivan (D-47th District), who proposed the legislation, said it is more restrictive than similar, previously proposed bills because it excludes highways in the Chicago-area counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will.
