Philadelphia – The focus of this year’s National Teen Driver Safety Week will be supporting parents who are teaching their teens to drive. From Oct. 16 to 22, parents will be encouraged to help adolescents navigate through the practice driving phase while teaching them skills needed to drive independently.
According to researchers from the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, teens with parents who monitor their driving in a helpful way are half as likely to crash and twice as likely to buckle up as teens with less-involved parents.
Roughly 87 percent of teens have a parent involved in the learning-to-drive process, researchers said. Parents are advised to spend a minimum of 50 hours of supervised driving with their teens and help educate them on Graduated Driver Licensing laws.
