Washington – The most recent technology in motor vehicle safety will be road-tested next year, the Department of Transportation announced Aug. 19.
The yearlong road safety field trial is scheduled to take place August 2012-2013 in Ann Arbor, MI. It will include up to 3,000 vehicles equipped with vehicle-to-vehicle communication equipment. V2V technology exchanges position, speed and location data among vehicles on the road to help reduce the risk of crashes. Drivers will be alerted to potential dangers in real time so they are able to take preventive actions.
“Technology is an investment in the future,” said Peter Appel, head of the Research and Innovative Technology Administration. “This pilot deployment of vehicles that ‘see’ and ‘talk’ with one another with the help of wireless communication will allow us to learn how drivers use electronic alerts to avoid crashes in a real-world environment.”
The results of this research are intended to help the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration make a decision about future use of V2V technology for light and heavy vehicles.
