NFPA applauds passage of home sprinkler legislation

The National Fire Protection Association this week applauded three states for adopting fire sprinkler requirements for new home construction.

The 2009 edition of the International Residential Code, which is strongly supported by Quincy, MA-based NFPA, requires sprinkler installation in all new one- and two-story homes.

On Dec. 10, 2009, Pennsylvania adopted IRC on townhouses beginning in 2010 and homes in 2011. The following day, New Hampshire voted to adopt IRC effective April 2012, and last week California adopted the 2010 California Residential Code, which includes IRC. The California legislation also becomes effective in 2011.
