OSHA launches primary metal industries NEP

Washington – OSHA has launched a National Emphasis Program (.pdf file) focused on the primary metal industries.

The NEP, effective May 19, targets establishments with a Standard Industrial Classification code under Major Group 33, which includes foundries, mills and smelting operations. OSHA said the goal is to heighten safety awareness for worker exposure to harmful chemicals and hazards such as noise and heat.

According to the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics occupational injury data, five of the top 20 industries with the most nonfatal injuries and illnesses cases were in the primary metal industries. Additionally, OSHA said inspection history shows primary metal industries workers are exposed to “serious” safety and health hazards on a daily basis.
