U.S. Chamber encourages wellness investment

Washington – The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is encouraging employers to make an investment in workplace wellness programs, suggesting that doing so will create a healthier workforce and significantly reduce health-related costs.

To promote the initiative, in early September the chamber partnered with the Care Continuum Alliance, a Washington-based trade organization that focuses on health.

Employees who participate in workplace wellness programs become more productive and are smarter about health care risks, chamber President and CEO Thomas J. Donohue said at the alliance’s recent annual meeting in San Francisco.

“Employers get a good return on their investment,” Donohue said. “In fact, wellness programs can reduce medical and absenteeism costs significantly.”
