Fire safety tips for dorm life

Is your teen heading away to college? If so, this is a perfect time to review the basics of fire safety with them.

The National Fire Protection Association says students living in dorms should:

  • Check smoke alarms at least once a month.
  • Make sure a working smoke alarm is in every bedroom.
  • Actively participate in fire drills and learn building evacuation plans.
  • Never remove batteries from a smoke alarm.
  • Keep a flashlight and use during a power outage.
  • Make sure candles are used away from flammable objects.
  • Smoke cigarettes outside and only where permitted.
  • Use a surge protector and plug it directly into the outlet.
