Is your teen heading away to college? If so, this is a perfect time to review the basics of fire safety with them.
The National Fire Protection Association says students living in dorms should:
- Check smoke alarms at least once a month.
- Make sure a working smoke alarm is in every bedroom.
- Actively participate in fire drills and learn building evacuation plans.
- Never remove batteries from a smoke alarm.
- Keep a flashlight and use during a power outage.
- Make sure candles are used away from flammable objects.
- Smoke cigarettes outside and only where permitted.
- Use a surge protector and plug it directly into the outlet.
