Aiming to reach teens and young adults about safe use of consumer products, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is trying something new: a music album.
We’re Safety Now Haven’t We, Volume 1 features six songs. They include “Protect Ya Noggin’,” which highlights the importance of wearing a helmet when riding a bike, skateboard or other form of wheeled transportation. The song has an English and a Spanish version.
“Phone Away” encourages listeners to put their cellphones away while walking. “Se Pone Caliente” (“It Gets Hot”) is about smoke alarms. The album’s other titles:
- “Going Off Like Fireworks” (on firework safety)
- “Off Road Adventure” (on wearing a helmet while using an all-terrain vehicle)
- “Beats To Relax/Be Safe To”
“One of the things we want to do with this album is just kind of provide young people a reminder that, ‘Hey, it’s important to wear a helmet when you’re riding a bike. And if you do it, you’ll be in a better position to live a healthier and safer life,’” Joseph Galbo, a social media specialist at the CPSC, told NPR. “It’s important to remember that when you’re walking with your phone to look up so you don’t fall down a manhole cover or accidentally walk into traffic or something.”
