Have you heard of avocado hand? ER doctors sure have.
University of Utah Health explains: “Avocado hand happens when a person uses a knife to remove the pit of an avocado but, instead, slices through the soft fruit into their hands or fingers.”
OUCH!
The consequences can be “devastating,” the medical center says. Your hand’s tendons, blood vessels, nerves and muscles all can be damaged.
Research has shown that thousands of avocado-related injuries occur every year.
Make sure you’re cutting an avocado the right way. The center recommends five steps:
- Place the avocado on a cutting board.
- Cut it in half lengthwise using a butter knife.
- Twist the avocado halves and pull it apart.
- Put your index and middle finger between the pit and your thumb on the back of the avocado half. Push to pop out the pit.
- Remove the skin using a spoon.
If you injure yourself, put pressure on the wound with gauze or a clean towel to help slow the bleeding, and get to an ER or urgent care clinic as quickly as you can.
