NSC urges safe driving during Fourth of July weekend travel

As millions of people make plans to travel over the Fourth of July weekend, new estimates from the National Safety Council emphasize why safe driving can’t be an afterthought.

NSC projects that 410 people may die in motor vehicle crashes from 6 p.m. on July 2 to 11:59 p.m. on July 5.

“Every driver has the power to help prevent a tragedy by making simple, safe choices behind the wheel,” NSC CEO Lorraine M. Martin said. “We have an opportunity to make this Independence Day one of the safest yet.”

Those simple, safe choices include:

Don’t drive distracted. Put your phone away and program infotainment systems before you leave.

Get plenty of sleep. Experts say adults should aim for seven to nine hours each night.

Plan ahead. Designate a sober driver or make alternate arrangements.

Follow posted speed limits. Speeding increases your risk of crashing.

Buckle up. This could save 100 lives this holiday weekend.

Look in the back seat before getting out of the vehicle. This helps prevent kids, pets and other passengers from being left behind in a hot vehicle.

Check your vehicle for open safety recalls. Go to ChecktoProtect.org to learn more.
