NSC urges people to drive safely this Fourth of July weekend

New estimates from the National Safety Council show that 437 people may die in preventable traffic crashes over the July Fourth weekend.

“The Fourth of July holiday is consistently one of the deadliest periods for roadway users during the year,” said Mark Chung, executive vice president of safety leadership and advocacy at the council. “Holiday travel and risky behaviors combine to create heightened dangers, making extra caution critical for everyone on the road. Every crash is preventable, and we all have a role in ensuring everyone makes it home safely.”

Driving after drinking is one of the riskiest behaviors and is associated with 38% of roadway deaths during the Independence Day weekend – one of the highest percentages among all major holidays.

NSC encourages everyone to:

  • Plan ahead and designate a sober driver before celebrations begin.
  • Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, cannabis or other impairing substances. Use a rideshare service, taxi or public transportation.
  • Host responsibly to ensure guests have a safe way home.
  • Wear a seat belt.
  • Speak up if someone is about to drive while impaired; take the keys and help them get home safely.
