The benefits of walking are well-known. Now, Norwegian researchers have identified another: decreased risk of chronic low-back pain.
Looking at data for more than 11,000 participants at least 20 years old in the in the Trøndelag Health (HUNT) Study in Norway, the researchers found that, after a mean follow-up of a little more than four years, walking for more than 100 minutes a day was linked to a 23% lower risk of chronic low-back pain compared with walking for less than 78 minutes a day.
Walking at faster speeds also was linked to lower risk of chronic low-back pain but to a lesser degree than “walking volume.”
The study was published in JAMA Network Open.
