Can you guess how many scrapes, cuts and bruises the average American gets in a lifetime? It’s up to 4,000, according to a recent survey commissioned by bandage manufacturer CURAD.
More than half (51%) of the 2,000 U.S. adults surveyed said they’re more likely to incur these injuries during the summer. The top three reasons cited:
- Distraction (34%)
- Clumsiness (22%)
- Kitchen mishaps (19%)
Speaking of distractions, more than 80% of the respondents reported that they were nearly injured while looking at their phone.
Here’s how the National Institutes of Health says you should treat minor cuts:
- Wash your hands with soap and water to prevent infection.
- Then, clean the cut thoroughly with mild soap and water.
- Use direct pressure to stop the bleeding.
- Apply antibacterial ointment and a clean bandage that won’t stick to the wound.
