You’re probably aware that sunshine is a source of vitamin D. But our busy lives can make it hard to get outside. That makes it important to eat a diet rich in vitamin D.
Why do we need vitamin D? “It helps your body absorb calcium, a mineral your body needs to build strong bones,” the National Institutes of Health says. “Your heart, muscles and nerves also need vitamin D. Even your immune system uses vitamin D to fight off germs.”
Try adding some of these vitamin D powerhouses to your plate:
- Fish high in fat, such as salmon, tuna and trout
- Cow’s milk
- Soy, almond or other dairy milk alternatives that have been fortified with vitamin D
- Yogurt
- Orange juice
- Egg yolks
- Mushrooms
- Cheese
