Greenbelt, MD — Inspectors across North America will examine braking systems, lights, tires and other commercial motor vehicle components May 17-19 during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual International Roadcheck.
The 35th edition of the 72-hour enforcement and safety outreach event will place special emphasis on wheel ends. “Wheel end components support the heavy loads carried by commercial motor vehicles, maintain stability and control, and are critical for braking,” CVSA states, adding that violations related to wheel-end equipment typically make up about 25% of vehicle out-of-service violations.
“We want every vehicle on our roadways to be in proper working order for the safety of the driver operating that vehicle and everyone traveling on our roadways,” CVSA President John Broers said in a press release.
Last year’s event produced more than 40,000 inspections, with 16.5% of vehicles and 5.3% of drivers placed out of service.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration participates in the Roadcheck, along with the Canadian Council of Motor Transport Administrators, Transport Canada, and the Ministry of Communications and Transportation in Mexico.
