Washington – NIOSH is requesting feedback on a draft update to its criteria for a recommended standard on occupational exposure to heat.
The research institute is scheduled to host a meeting Feb. 13 in Cincinnati to solicit public comment.
NIOSH is seeking input on whether worker acclimatization is clearly explained in the draft, as well as if additional recommendations should be made, additional risk factors for heat-related illnesses should be discussed, and additional research should be mentioned.
The document was last updated in 1986. It identified the effects of heat; provided measuring techniques; and made recommendations for occupational standards, prevention and control. According to NIOSH, the 2010 Gulf Coast oil spill prompted a review of whether the document should be updated to reflect new research.
