Washington – A new website announced Aug. 5 by Secretary of Transportation Anthony Foxx aims to reduce pedestrian fatalities.
The website includes tips on teaching children about safe walking and reports on effective pedestrian safety projects.
In 2011, 4,432 pedestrians died in traffic crashes – an 8 percent increase from 2009, according to a report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Of those deaths, 75 percent occurred in urban areas and 70 percent were at non-intersections. Most crashes occurred at night and often involved alcohol, the Department of Transportation stated in a press release.
