NSC: Simple acts can save lives on the roads this holiday season

New estimates from the National Safety Council show that 860 lives will be lost this holiday season as a result of roadway incidents.

A leading cause of these deaths – and all fatal traffic crashes – is impaired driving. Typically, alcohol-impaired drivers are involved in 37% of Christmas traffic fatalities and 34% of New Year’s traffic fatalities.

“These losses are preventable,” NSC CEO Lorraine M. Martin said.

Simple acts such as wearing a seat belt and arranging ahead of time for a sober driver save lives. Other actions drivers can take: eliminating distractions behind the wheel, observing speed limits, and watching for pedestrians and cyclists.

“When we choose to drive sober, buckle up and stay focused on the road, we’re choosing to protect the people we love and ensure everyone can celebrate together safely,” Martin added.
