Denver — The National Safety Council has named Anas Al-Hamwi the new chair of its Board of Directors.
Al-Hamwi succeeds Brian J. Cook, effective Monday. Cook turned over the gavel during the Opening Session of the 2025 NSC Safety Congress & Expo.
Al-Hamwi has been a member of the NSC board since 2017. He serves as regional vice president for Walgreens Retail USA, where he leads health, safety and injury management. A founding member of the Walgreens Boots Alliance Health, Safety and Environmental Governance Committee, he’s advanced safety culture through an enhanced OSHA response system and an Active Care model that reduced workplace injuries for three consecutive years.
Nicole Piggott will serve as board vice chair, which was previously filled by Al-Hamwi.
Four others were named to the board:
Brian Callahan, CEO and president of ISN and current chair of the NSC Campbell Institute
Darryl Hill, who most recently served as senior vice president of safety and security at First Student Inc.
Travis Parsons, director of occupational safety and health for the Laborers’ Health & Safety Fund of North America
Robert Rudge Jr., senior vice president and chief safety and security officer at U. S. Steel
Nick Smith, president of NSC
“Strong leadership is critical to advancing the NSC mission of saving lives, from the workplace to anyplace,” NSC CEO Lorraine M. Martin said. “We are honored to welcome Anas as chair and four outstanding leaders to our board. Their expertise, guidance and dedication will be invaluable as we work toward a future where everyone is safe in our workplaces, roadways and communities.”
