If it’s June, it’s National Safety Month.
Now in its 29th year, this National Safety Council initiative raises awareness of injury and illness prevention. Go to nsc.org/nsm to find activities, tips and other resources you can use to engage workers and reinforce your commitment to keeping all employees safe and healthy.
Each week of NSM – sponsored this year by EcoOnline – has a theme:
Week 1: Continuous improvement
Week 2: Employee engagement
Week 3: Roadway safety
Week 4: Well-being
In this issue, our Safety Tips section reflects each of the four themes. And, in keeping with the Week 2 theme of employee engagement, Associate Editor Barry Bottino has written a follow-up to his 2024 article about selling safety.
For that first article, he reached out to four safety experts for advice on how safety pros can convince senior leadership to support safety. For his latest piece, he’s asked those same experts how to earn the trust and buy-in of workers on the front line. The group offers strategies each has found success with, examples of the types of resistance safety pros might encounter and advice for gaining allies throughout an organization.
During this time of uncertainty about how government agencies focused on worker safety and health will be structured and staffed, National Safety Month is more important than ever. I hope you’ll take some time to reassure workers that, whatever happens, your dedication to them remains strong.
