You’ve just witnessed a vehicle crash. Do you know what you should do?
Here’s what the National Safety Council recommends:
- Park about 100 feet from the crash site and turn on your hazard lights.
- Call 911 and report the incident.
- Use flares or emergency lights to alert other drivers.
- If it’s safe to do so, approach anyone who’s been hurt.
- Ask the victim to put their vehicle in park and turn off the engine, if they can. You may need to help them do so or turn it off for them.
- Move the victim(s) to safety only if you identify an immediate threat.
- Apply pressure to bleeding wounds.
- If a victim isn’t breathing, start CPR if you’re comfortable. Let medical professionals take over when they arrive on the scene.
