NFPA releases home fire report

Quincy, MA – Fire departments responded to an annual average of 373,900 home structure fires between 2005 and 2009, according to a report released June 29 by the National Fire Protection Association. On average, home fires resulted in 2,650 civilian deaths and 12,890 civilian injuries annually.

Tougher crib regulations now in effect

Washington – New crib safety standards issued by the Consumer Product Safety Commission went into effect June 28. All cribs sold in the United States now must comply with these stricter safety standards.

New training tools cover miners’ rights

Arlington, VA – The Mine Safety and Health Administration on June 23 released new training tools to educate miners on their rights and responsibilities.

9/11 police responders maintain lung function: study

New York – Ninety-five percent of police officers in the New York Police Department Emergency Services Unit who responded to the 9/11 terrorist attacks showed no long-term decrease in lung function, according to an NYPD study.
