Traveling to visit family, relax on a tropical beach or hit the slopes? If you’ll be packing a suitcase or heavy bags, remember to keep safety in mind.
The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons says carrying and lifting heavy luggage can result in neck, wrist, back and shoulder pain – and can even cause serious injuries.
To avoid luggage-related injuries, the AAOS recommends the following:
- Buy sturdy, lightweight luggage that comes equipped with wheels and a handle.
- Don’t overpack. Use multiple smaller pieces of luggage rather than one large piece.
- Practice good lifting techniques: bend at your knees, lift with your legs and hold luggage close to your body. Refrain from twisting your body when lifting luggage.
- Ask for help if you can’t comfortably lift or carry your luggage.
- Carry your luggage up stairs – don’t drag it behind you.
