NTSB: Transportation deaths rose 3 percent in 2012

Washington – Overall transportation-related fatalities increased 3 percent in 2012 from the previous year, according to preliminary figures released Feb. 14 by the National Transportation Safety Board.

Roadway fatalities, which made up nearly 94 percent of transportation deaths in 2012, increased about 4 percent to 33,561 among all categories other than buses, which decreased to 39 in 2012 from 55 in 2011. Fatalities on or near rails increased 6 percent to 803.

Other modes of transportation also decreased in 2012:

  • Aviation fatalities decreased about 10 percent to 449.
  • Pipeline fatalities decreased to 12 in 2012 from 14 in 2011.
  • Marine transportation fatalities decreased about 12 percent to 706.
