FMCSA final rule sets commercial learner’s permit standards

Washington – Drivers who want a commercial learner’s permit must meet the same requirements necessary to hold a commercial driver’s license and will be subject to the same disqualification penalties, according a final rule (.pdf file) published May 9 by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Officials said the final rule aims to enhance safety by ensuring only qualified drivers are allowed to operate commercial motor vehicles.

The final rule is scheduled to go into effect July 8. Petitions for reconsideration must be received by June 8.
