FRA announces final rule on train safety

Washington – The Federal Railroad Administration on April 9 published a final rule (.pdf file) to modernize the agency’s safety regulatory program for locomotives.

The final rule eliminates regulatory roadblocks and provides information and guidance on new technology and engineering best practices, according to a Department of Transportation press release. Additionally, the final rule is intended to provide “reliability and performance criteria” for the design and operation of locomotive electronic components and safety systems.

The final rule is scheduled to go into effect June 8.
