National Public Health Week focuses on vascular wellness

Chicago – In recognition of National Public Health Week (April 4-10), the Society for Vascular Surgery is encouraging healthy lifestyles to protect vascular wellness.

“It takes a concerted effort to maximize your health and minimize the chance of developing vascular diseases such as hypertension or high cholesterol that can lead to stroke, heart attack or amputation,” said Dr. Steve Leers, SVS member The organization recommends individuals refrain from smoking, engage in moderate physical activity at least 30 minutes a day and eat in accordance with the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans (.pdf file). The guidelines recommend a diet rich in:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Whole grains
  • Low-fat dairy products
  • Lean meats, beans, eggs and nuts
  • Food low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt and added sugar

Further, SVS recommends people at risk of high cholesterol receive an annual cholesterol blood test.
